Why this exists

This week I had coffee with a friend, a designer with twenty-plus years behind her. She'd just been laid off and the jobs she was finding wanted more hours for less pay.

At the same time, I know Gen X women starting businesses right now who need exactly what she does. They want someone with real experience who doesn't need the backstory explained.

They just can't find each other. So I posted about it and a lot of women answered with some version of the same thing: count me in.

This is that.

Why Gen X women?

Because we're carrying more at once than almost anyone. Most of it is invisible from the outside.

of Americans in their 40s are sandwiched between an aging parent and their own kids. Among people in their 50s the share climbed from 36% to 45% in four years. Source: Pew Research Center, 2026

  • 24%

  • 13%

Kids, parents, a shifting job market, AI and our own changing bodies, all at the same time. That's a lot to carry alone. It's a lot less to carry together.

Questions

What is The Gen X Factor?

The Gen X Factor is a new network where Gen X women find each other for hiring, freelance and fractional work, co-founding, career changes and peer support. It was started in 2026 in Michigan. Members get an invite to a private Slack and personal introductions to women on the same path.

Why focus on Gen X women?

Because this is the group carrying the most at once: aging parents, kids at home or in college, late-career layoffs, a job market reshaped by AI and menopause, often all in the same year. Gen X women have decades of experience and are often overlooked for it. They are also the people most likely to understand each other.

Who is it for?

It's for women born roughly between 1965 and 1980 who are building a business, looking for work, changing careers or looking for peers who share their references and their reality. Many have left corporate jobs or been laid off and want to put decades of experience to work.

What do I get when I join?

Two things. First, an invite to our private Slack, where members hire each other, find project work and trade advice. Second, personal introductions. We read every form and match you with women on the same path, whether you are hiring, looking for work or building something.

Is this another app?

No. There's no new app to learn. Members get an invite to a private Slack where Gen X women post gigs, ask for help and share wins. We also make introductions by hand when we see a strong match for you.

Will there be group calls?

We're planning small video calls for women on the same path: hiring and freelance work, building something or changing careers. Members hear about them first in Slack.

What happens to my information?

It's used only to make introductions. We share your details with a match only after you say yes and we never sell them.
